Fred Hutt has been a church bell ringer at Byfield for 50 years. For 46 years he has been tower captain and has trained and kept a band of ringers going regularly. Ringers from all around know that there will invariably be a practice at Byfield on Friday evenings. September 14 was Fred’s birthday as well as the patronal festival of Holy Cross church where he has also been a churchwarden for 29 years and chorister for over 50 years. June Bates of the local ringers organised tower captains from six of the many nearby towers with which Fred has close connections, to ring a quarter peal before the patronal festival service in celebration. Fred was only told of the arrangement by his wife Janet as the ringing started. As the quarter peal ended Fred was there to express his thanks and then in true and inimitable style got on with the ringing for service with his latest young trainees. During the service, Colin Hewitt, Rector of Byfield presented Fred with a bound volume of the monthly articles that Fred has contributed to the Parish magazine on 50 years of bellringing at Byfield.
