Rung .. before a celebration service of 10 hymns and three readings for Jim Coles’ 90th birthday. Over 100 of his cricketing, ringing and village friends and relations filled the church and later walked up to the village hall for a surprise party arranged by Peter Box. After several decades, Jim is still secretary of the active village cricket club, but has had to give up ringing which he began 75 years ago. This was the first quarter peal for the new tenor clapper which Jim generously donated in July. G.P. RW p940

In late August the bells at Preston Capes were attacked with spanners to ease the go of the 17 cwt tenor which has become notorious of late. Despite an erratic caller, but with the aid of a simple method and reminders from the observation bells, a fair quarter was rung to celebrate Jim Coles` 80th birthday. Although a tiny village, Preston Capes has had an active cricket club and Jim has been a member since a lad. His father taught him to ring 65 years ago and Jim has taught many to ring there and at nearby Newnham and Badby. The second ringer`s grandmother was Jim`s schoolmistress at the village school, which is now part of Norman St John Stevas` home. A volunteer to call a peal for his "ton” was forthcoming, and on Jim`s performance after the quarter we expect him to make it and still be active with the cricket club. GHP
